My Journey Through Self-Sabotage in Mid-Life
My journey through self-sabotage during my mid-life crisis has been a long one, marked by significant life events and personal challenges. Watching my mother suffer and pass away at the young age of 48 was a devastating blow that I buried and never accepted, it would go on to shape my outlook on life and health. In my 50’s I was diagnosed with breast cancer twice, following these I went through multiple operations which disfigured my body and made me feel less feminine.
You would think that was enough of a WHY to make committed change however despite these experiences, I found myself caught in cycles of self-sabotage. I often turned to alcohol as a way to numb my pain and worked long hours in stressful roles to keep myself busy to avoid confronting my emotions. I sought relationships that didn't lift me up, thinking that external validation could fill the void within me. It took years of struggle and reflection to understand that these behaviours were my way of coping with fear, grief, and a deep-seated sense of inadequacy.
Breaking Free from Self-Sabotage In Mid-Life
1. Acknowledge Your Patterns
The first step to change is awareness. I had to confront the fact that I was sabotaging my own happiness and health. Keeping a journal helped me track my thoughts and actions, allowing me to identify recurring themes and triggers.
